Simple + Happy

clarity. simplicity. natural order. just reading those words brings a feeling of calm. i’ve been finding myself craving simplicity more and more in my daily life. it’s way too easy to get caught up in consumer culture, constant seeking, and clutter. i know the most important things in my life are connection, experience, and freedom. things are not the most important things in life. there’s something about simplifying anything, whether it be your food or your finances that results in more freedom.

so with that philosophy in mind i’ve compiled a short list of what makes my life simple + happy.

1. morning rituals – i wake up most mornings without an alarm. i have three things i do every morning without fail. exercise, meditation, and tea time. coming up with a morning ritual is the single best thing you can do to start your day off on the right foot. the exercise doesn’t have to be 2 hours at the gym either. most mornings i lace up my shoes and go for a brisk walk. some days i meet a friend for yoga or hike local trails. even if you only have 20 minutes, starting your day with exercise is awesome! i then do a simple meditation and make a cup of tea. my tea time is an opportunity to journal, write, map out the day, or practice the art of appreciation.

2. meditation – i spend 10 to 20 minutes every morning practicing a mindfulness meditation. the health benefits of regular meditation are well documented, but what i like most is the relaxed state it puts me in for my day. just simply sitting still and focusing on my breathing clears away anxiety, mental clutter ,and stress.

3. clean eating – the simpler i make my food, the bigger my life gets. when i’m really in my zone, i prefer to eat three simple clean meals a day. endless snacking is distracting for me personally. the less sugar and flour i consume the easier my life is. really! i love eating simple, clean, foods and so does my body. i eat my meals and get on with living. this one thing can really help anyone out there struggling with any compulsive behaviors around food.

i could go on here but the whole point is to keep it simple. simpler living really does make life more effortless and enjoyable. being present in your own life is the best gift you can give yourself. take a deep breath, smile, and enjoy the simple + happy things your life is showing you.
